Street
The street Hans-Sachs-Straße bears the name of the 16th-century poet, who hailed from Nuremberg. The bourgeois houses with their neo-baroque façades were constructed prior to 1900 and have been largely preserved. In 1981, they were declared to constitute an ensemble of listed buildings by the city of Munich. A very popular neighbourhood, the little Hans-Sachs-Straße nevertheless retains all its many charms. Home to artists and creative minds, it is also the dwelling place of young families and long-term residents. It is a district combining a rich historical tradition with a modern approach and a cosmopolitan attitude, where neighbourliness remains important. Residents appreciate the area’s central location and outstanding public transport connections as much as the proximity to the banks of the Isar, a popular meeting place in summer.
The Glockenbach district is a thriving, vibrant corner of Munich: its culinary offering ranges from Italian, Greek, Afghan, French and Vietnamese to Bavarian – all just a stone’s throw away from the hotel. Delicious breakfasts are served in the surrounding cafés, and watching the world go by over coffee and cake is a popular pastime. The owners of the district’s little shops still take time to advise their customers: the bookseller can always suggest a good read, the goldsmith designs individual jewellery, and exclusive shoes are manufactured in one of the neighbourhood shoe shops. And the best ice-cream in Munich – hand-made, of course – can be enjoyed just a few streets away. The Arena cinema has been a firm fixture of the street for a century. An art house establishment, it shows an eclectic medley of films, combining entertainment with nostalgia and throwing international films in their original versions with German subtitles into the mix – ideal for film buffs.
The Gärtnerplatz, which takes its name from the famous Munich architect Friedrich von Gärtner, is at the very heart of the Glockenbach district. The square is surrounded by neoclassical buildings, including the Gärtnerplatz Theatre, well-known for its operetta productions. The numerous cafés and restaurants, the fountain and colourful flowerbeds in the centre lend the square a Mediterranean flair. On balmy summer evenings, the Gärtnerplatz is one of Munich’s most popular meeting places.
